Das Schweizerische Zentrum für Islam und Gesellschaft (SZIG, französisch: Centre Suisse Islam et Société [CSIS]) der Universität Freiburg wurde im Januar 2015 gegründet. Es versteht sich als äKompetenzzentrum für aktuelle gesellschaftliche Fragen zum Islam in der Schweiz mit Fokus auf einer islamischen Selbstreflexion". Entstanden ist es in Anlehnung an die Empfehlungen des Nationalen Forschungsprojekts (NFP) 58 äReligionsgemeinschaften, Staat und Gesellschaft" (2007–2010) und die im Jahre 2009 erschienene Teilstudie äImam-Ausbildung und islamische Religionspädagogik in der Schweiz?". In diesen Jahren wurden in der Schweiz islamrelevante Debatten kontrovers diskutiert, wie etwa die Debatte um Minarette und das damit einhergehende Minarettverbot von 2009. Besonderen Einfluss auf die Gründung des SZIG hatte der von 2010 bis 2011 vom Bundesamt für Migration (BFM) koordinierte äMuslim-Dialog" und eine Arbeitsgruppe, die vom Staatssekretariat für Bildung, Forschung und Innovation (SBFI) einberufen wurde und aus Vertretern aus Bundesbehörden, Universitäten und muslimischen Akteuren bestand (2012–2015). Sie gab der Universität Freiburg den Auftrag, islamisch-theologische Studien einzuführen, wo es auch angesiedelt wurde. Mit der Gründung hatte das SZIG auch gegen seine Schließung zu kämpfen: Die Schweizer Volkspartei Freiburg wollte das SZIG durch eine kantonale, jedoch für verfassungswidrig erklärte Volksinitiative schließen lassen. Das SZIG bietet mittlerweile zwei Master-Studiengänge an, die beide den Titel äIslam und Gesellschaft" tragen. Ferner sind verschiedene Dissertationsprojekte am Zentrum angesiedelt, die entsprechend des Profils des Zentrums stark interdisziplinär, sozialethisch und religionspädagogisch ausgerichtet sind. Das Zentrum bietet Weiterbildungsmöglichkeiten zum Beispiel im Bereich Seelsorge an. Mit der Gründung des SZIG schließt sich die Schweiz somit den Entwicklungen in Europa zur Etablierung Islamischer Theologie an Universitäten an.

The Swiss Center for Islam and Society (German: Schweizerisches Zentrum für Islam und Gesellschaft [SZIG], French. Center Suisse Islam et Société [CSIS]) of the University of Freiburg was founded in January 2015. This center sees itself as a "competence center for current social questions about Islam in Switzerland with a focus on Islamic self-reflectionÓ. The SZIG was established on the basis of the recommendations of the National Research Project (NRP) 58 "Religionsgemeinschaften, Staat und Gesellschaft " (2007– 2010) and the study "Imam-Ausbildung und islamische Religionspädagogik in der Schweiz?Ó published in 2009. These years also mark a point in time in which debates on Islam in Switzerland were controversially discussed, such as the ban on minarets in 2009. An important impact on the foundation of the SZIG had the "Muslim-DialogÓ (2010?2011), which was coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Migration (BFM), and a working group, which was constituted by the State Secretary for Education, Research and Innovation (SBFI) and consisted of members of the federal agencies, University and of the Muslim community (2012–2015). This working group gave the University of Fribourg the task to found Islamic theological studies and integrate the SZIG as part of it. Since its beginnings, the SZIG had to struggle against its closure. The Schweizer Volkspartei Freiburg was keen to close it by a cantonal initiative, which, on the other hand, was declared unconstitutional. The SZIG now offers two study programs for Masters degrees, both of which have the title "Islam and SocietyÓ. Furthermore, various dissertation projects are located at the SZIG, which, according to the profile of the center, are strongly interdisciplinary and oriented towards social ethics and religious pedagogy. The center also offers training opportunities, e.g. in spiritual welfare. With the founding of the SZIG, Switzerland is thus joining the developments in Europe to establish Islamic theology at universities.
