Animals of Creation – Creation of animals. Insights into human-animal relationships in Hindu creation myths
Für den Betrachter einer Gesellschaft, deren religiöse Vergangenheit sich hauptsächlich als monotheistisch versteht, ist es bisweilen schwierig zu beurteilen, wie polytheistische oder atheistische Vorstellungen von der Welt die Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Tier definieren und welche moralischen Vorstellungen daraus hervorgehen. Der Hinduismus kennt eine Vielzahl deistischer und nicht-personaler Schöpfungsmythen: doch wie passen Wiedergeburtslehre und Heilige Kuh zusammen? Anhand einer Auswahl der bekanntesten hinduistischen Schöpfungsmythen (darunter Puruṣa, Hiraćyagharba, Samudra Manthana und die Da?›āvatāra) wird gezeigt, welche Rolle Tiere in der Schöpfung spielen können. Sie sind die Geschöpfe, die bei der Schöpfung entstehen, helfen jedoch auch mit und übernehmen tragende Rollen. Wie eine moralische Botschaft zum Umgang des Menschen mit der Umwelt aus diesen Schöpfungsmotiven abgeleitet werden kann, wird am Schluss debattiert.

For the observer of a society whose religious past considers itself primarily monotheistic, it is particularly difficult to judge how polytheistic or atheistic ideas about the world define the relationship between humans and animals and what moral ideas arise from this. Hinduism recognizes a multitude of deistic and impersonal creation myths: but how do the doctrine of reincarnation and the sacred cow fit together? Using a selection of the most well-known Hindu creation myths (including Puruṣa, Hiraćyagharba, Samudra Manthana, and the Da?›āvatāra), the role animals can play in creation is demonstrated. They are the creatures that come into being during creation, but they also assist and assume supporting roles. How a moral message regarding humankind's interaction with the environment can be derived from these creation motifs is discussed in the conclusion.
